Ripon Press: Legislators talk debt, concealed carry over eggs

By Aaron Becker

Sen. Ron Johnson admitted he didn’t like talking heavy politics this early in the morning.

But he believes the nation’s debt is a reality that Americans must face.

“Our financial situation in this country is dire, and our political system is not addressing it,” the newly elected Republican U.S. senator said.

These and other remarks were addressed to more than 30 area residents at the “Eggs & Issues” forum at 7 a.m. this morning (Wednesday) at Royal Ridges.

Also in attendance were state Sen. Luther Olsen, R-Ripon, state Rep. Joan Ballweg, R-Markesan, and representatives from the offices of U.S. Rep. Tom Petri and Sen. Herb Kohl.

Johnson referenced the U.S. national debt (www.usdebtclock.org), which details $114 trillion owed for “unfunded liabilities” such as Social Security, Medicare and prescription drugs.

That’s money needed to cover promises already made, Johnson explained.
