The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Ron Johnson accuses president of "scaring seniors" in debt-ceiling debate
By Craig Gilbert
In a sharply worded letter to President Barack Obama, Sen. Ron Johnson and several GOP colleagues accused the president of trying to “scare seniors” by saying their Social Security benefits could be imperiled if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling.
“You have been engaged in political theater, demagoguery, and a dangerous game of political chicken,” said the letter, signed by Johnson and 12 other first-year Senate Republicans.
Johnson has been very vocal in arguing that failure to raise the debt ceiling would not be as dire an outcome as the administration and a number of economists predict.
He has accused the White House of irresponsibly fanning anxieties about that scenario, just as Democrats have accused congressional Republicans of irresponsibly placing the economy in jeopardy with the prospect of a default.
