Senator Johnson Calls for Transparency from Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction

Washington, D.C. – Senator Ron Johnson (WI) made the following statement today regarding a joint letter he signed encouraging transparency from the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction:

“Conducting backroom negotiations at the very last minute is no way to decide the fiscal future of America.  The American people have a right to see for themselves the measures that their elected officials are proposing and debating. That is how Congress and the President should have prepared the budget of the United States.

The American people ought to be concerned that Congress has decided not to address our spending crisis through the legislative process: by adopting a budget and then sticking to it. Instead Congress has created a special committee that short-circuits debate and avoids real accountability. The least we should expect is for that committee to do its business in the open.”
