As the price of gasoline continues to creep up, U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) is calling on President Obama to take steps to lower costs.

During a stop in Chippewa Falls this week, the first-term Senate Republican discussed rising gas prices. Johnson, who supported ending federal subsidies for ethanol production, said the U.S. needs to look to energy sources at home.

For example, he says it would be “extremely helpful” if Obama would make a decision on the Keystone XL Pipeline.

The Obama Administration has delayed action on approving the pipeline, which would allow tar sands crude oil in Canada to be moved to refineries in Texas. The President has until February 21st to make a decision on the project. Environmental and clean energy groups oppose the Canadian pipeline

Johnson says oil prices are increasing for a number of reasons, such as threats of force from Iran over the presence of U.S. military forces in the Middle East. Analysts expect gas prices to hit record highs this year.
