The Hill: Sen. Johnson: Obama planned single-payer health care system that would ensure a 'final bankruptcy' for US
Freshman Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on Monday accused President Obama of plotting a single-payer healthcare plan that would cost U.S. taxpayers $1 trillion annually and lead to national bankruptcy.
"This plan was designed to lead to a single-payer system which President Obama really, I believe, wanted," said Johnson from the Senate floor. "That would cost us close to a trillion dollars per year.
"I mean, that represents a deficit risk that would just absolutely ensure the final bankruptcy of this nation," Johnson continued.
The centerpiece of the Affordable Care Act, passed in March 2010 with no Republican support, is a requirement that all Americans purchase health insurance or pay a penalty. The Supreme Court is set to deliberate the constitutionality of that provision later this month.
