Washington, D.C. – Senator Ron Johnson (WI) released the following statement regarding the Senate budget debate today:
“I want to thank my colleagues - Senators Toomey, Paul and Lee – for putting forward serious proposals to address our nation’s fiscal situation. I'd also like to thank the House for adopting a responsible plan. It’s important for Members of the House and Senate to be accountable to the American people – to be clear about how they propose to fix our long-term budget problems.
“President Obama has now put forward four budgets. He has yet to propose any solution to save Social Security or Medicare. How serious are those proposals? His 2013 budget was defeated 0 to 99 today in the Senate after losing 0 to 414 in the House. This is not a serious proposal. It is not leadership.
“I am ready to work with anybody who's willing to acknowledge the problem and work in good faith to solve it. But we cannot work toward a bipartisan compromise until the other side proposes a plan. If the President is ever willing to put forward a budget that earns even a single vote in the House or Senate, that would be a start.”
