Johnson Sponsors Legislation to Ensure Continued Use of Highway 41

Washington, D.C. – Senator Ron Johnson (WI) sponsored legislation today that would allow trucks that are currently using Highway 41 to continue to drive on the highway when it becomes a federal interstate next year and is subject to lower weight restrictions. Johnson said:

"I am pleased to be able to work with Senator Baldwin and Representatives Petri and Ribble on this bipartisan effort. All parties involved understand that Highway 41 is one of the major economic arteries in our state, so we've pledged to collaboratively move this bill through the legislative process.

"The importance of grandfathering in the current weight limits to our state’s manufacturing and trucking community is enormous. Federal approval of this legislation will represent another vital step in a lengthy intergovernmental process that will ultimately give 41 official status as part of our Interstate Highway System.

"It is my hope the legislation can move swiftly through Congress this year and WisDOT’s continuing efforts to transform Highway 41 into an Interstate continue smoothly, with federal DOT assistance and not interference."
