Washington – The Senate on Tuesday passed the Clay Hunt Suicide Prevention for American Veterans Act, a bill that improves mental health care and suicide prevention resources for veterans. The bill requires outside evaluations of suicide prevention programs at the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs and lays the groundwork for systematic improvements. The VA will also create a new, centralized website to provide information to veterans on available mental health care services.

Senator Johnson voted in favor the bill. He later remarked:

“Our veterans, the finest among us, need to receive the best health care and the finest service possible from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Reforms are needed in VA health care so we can honor the promises made to those who have sacrificed for our freedom. I intend to find further areas of agreement with my colleagues to reform the VA system.”
