Johnson, Wisconsin Delegation Ask for President Obama’s Prompt Support for Wisconsin’s Flood Damage
Governor declared a state of emergency for 14 counties due to severe flooding
WASHINGTON – Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) led the sending of a letter by the entire Wisconsin congressional delegation to President Obama Tuesday urging his support for disaster assistance for Wisconsinites in western regions struck by the severe flooding last month. Gov. Scott Walker has stated that flash flooding and mudslides caused more than $14 million in damage to roads and other infrastructure.
The text of the delegation’s letter to the president is below:
“We write to ask for your prompt support for the people of the State of Wisconsin following torrential rain, flash flooding, and mudslides. On September 22, 2016, Governor Walker declared a state of emergency for Buffalo, Chippewa, Clark, Columbia, Crawford, Eau Claire, Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe, Richland, Sauk, Trempealeau, and Vernon counties. This week, the governor added Adams County to the list.
“Beginning on September 21, 2016, torrential rain caused widespread flooding, mudslides, and damage to homes, businesses, roads, and bridges. The flooding also claimed the lives of two Wisconsin residents. At this time, we understand that the governor has requested that the Federal Emergency Management Agency conduct a preliminary damage assessment for public assistance in 12 counties. The governor may seek additional federal resources in the coming weeks to ensure an effective response beyond what capabilities the state and local governments can provide. If so, we urge you to promptly review the request for assistance for the State of Wisconsin, in a manner consistent with all laws, rules and regulations.”
