Johnson Talks Trade, Tariffs at the Atlantic Council

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, spoke about immigration and the effect of tariffs on Wisconsin’s economy at the Atlantic Council this morning. Excerpts from his remarks are below.

“[The border crisis] is an out-of-control situation. This is exactly what President Trump was trying to and is trying to solve. But the president has not been getting much help from Mexico and he certainly has been getting no help from the United States Congress whatsoever. So I understand his frustration, but I don’t exactly agree with the administration’s world view when it comes to the trade wars and tariffs.”

“What we are seeing, particularly in Wisconsin, is not only have our farmers been retaliated against – Mexico is our largest export market of cheese, for example – but manufacturers who participate in the global supply chain, potentially bringing in components from lower cost countries and assemble those components into some pretty sophisticated pieces of equipment and they export those overseas, they’re being put in an economic disadvantage.”
