Johnson Discusses Possible Tax Hikes, Importance of Filibuster
WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) joined Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo Monday to discuss the possibility of President Biden raising taxes and the importance of the Senate maintaining a 60 vote threshold for most pieces of legislation.
Excerpts are below and video of the interview can be found here.
Tax increases
“I hope that in any kind of tax reform we actually focus on tax simplification and tax rationalization. But just as the disaster they have created at the border by reversing President Trump's successful policies, they are bound and determined to do the same thing. They’ll start punishing success, so they will get less of it. Let’s face it, you tax anything you get less of it, and that could be a very sad fact of what happens when President Biden raises taxes.”
On Joe Manchin Supporting the Senate’s 60-vote threshold
“I hope [Senator Joe Manchin] holds true to his promise, because it would be a disaster to eliminate that 60-vote threshold. And that's what we are talking about is forcing any kind of massive important piece of legislation that’s not related to the budget, you have to have some kind of bipartisan cooperation, 60 votes. In today's Senate we’re split 50/50 – that means 10 Republicans signing on. That's going to force compromise and that’s going to force bipartisanship, but that’s not what President Biden and Democrats are focused on right now.”
