Johnson Amendment to Monitor China’s Censorship and Disinformation Efforts Added to Bipartisan Strategic Competition Act of 2021
WASHINGTON – On Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) successfully added language to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s bipartisan Strategic Competition Act of 2021, that will require the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) and Open Technology Fund (OTF) to report to Congress annually regarding the funding, progress, and impact the OTF has made to pierce the Chinese government’s internet censorship. The Chinese government is increasingly aggressive and its malign activities are apparent, including human rights abuses and its censorship both inside and outside of the country. This amendment stresses the necessity to effectively fund tools to circumvent the Chinese Communist Party’s censorship of the internet.
