Sen. Johnson Leads Effort to Pass Legislation Combatting Opioid Epidemic

WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and 6 of his Senate GOP colleagues reintroduced the Stopping Overdoses of Fentanyl Analogues (SOFA) Act. This bill codifies an effective regulation that is preventing new fentanyl-related substances from entering our communities by permanently classifying fentanyl-related substances as Schedule I under the Controlled Substance Act. “Passing the SOFA Act is more important than ever as Americans face the worst border crisis in our nation’s history. This bill helps law enforcement combat the opioid epidemic by deterring the manufacture of new fentanyl substances,” said Sen. Johnson. “Wisconsin families and American communities have been devastated by the opioid epidemic.” 

The Stopping Overdoses of Fentanyl Analogues Act has been endorsed by the National Police Association, Wisconsin Professional Police Association, and the National Association of Police Organizations.

Sen. Johnson was joined by Senators Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), and Jim Banks (R-Ind.).
